The Robot That Ducks: How Humanoids Get Out of Their Cages

Watch a clip of Agility Robotics' new Digit 5 encountering a person and it does something almost apologetic: it ducks down low, in what one writer called a display of deep respect for humanity. It is not respect, of course. It is engineering. Agility says Digit 5 is its first humanoid "engineered for cooperatively safe work at scale," using proprietary algorithms and multiple sensors to watch for people and then autonomously avoid them, stop, or even assume a seated position. The whole design points at a single, unglamorous problem that has quietly become the industry's biggest obstacle: how do you let a 50-pound-lifting machine share a floor with human workers without something going wrong?

For now, most factory robots solve that problem by being locked away. They sit inside cages with multi-step shutdown procedures, kept apart from people because the cheapest way to guarantee safety is to guarantee separation. That works, but it also caps the payoff. The pitch for humanoids has always been that they can slot into workplaces built for humans, and a robot you have to fence off cannot do that. So Agility's marketing leans hard on the language of legitimacy, boasting of 65,000 hours of operation and repeatedly name-checking OSHA; an earlier Digit passed a safety test the company called "OSHA-recognized." The subtext is aimed squarely at the people who sign the cheques and, more importantly, at their insurers.

The nervousness is earned. Social media is full of clips of humanoids lurching into people, and this year a remote-controlled robot at a hot pot restaurant in Cupertino broke into a flailing dance that took three staff to restrain, spilling sauces in the scuffle. When CEO Peggy Johnson says Digit 5 is "removing a major barrier to scaling humanoid robots in industrial environments," the barrier she means is not technical capability. It is trust.

Governments are starting to codify that trust rather than wait for it. This week San Mateo County unanimously approved what officials call a first-of-its-kind permit system for businesses using autonomous AI robots in public-facing spaces. Any bot with cameras or sensors, some autonomy, and a lithium-ion battery will need a permit, plus disclosure of its manufacturer and safety record and proof it meets battery, privacy, accessibility and food-safety rules. Notably, the ordinance also reaches into labour: owners must report how a robot affects human jobs, and a business that displaces workers has to redeploy them at equal pay, give 60 days' notice with severance, or pay into a county retraining fund.

What is striking is that San Mateo currently has no known robots roaming its restaurants and hotels. The county is regulating ahead of the technology, on the theory, as UC Berkeley's Ken Goldberg put it, that it is better to think about what could go wrong before anyone gets hurt. Put the two stories together and you can see the shape of the next phase. The hard part is no longer teaching a humanoid to walk or lift. It is convincing a workplace, a regulator and an insurer that the thing walking toward your employees will reliably get out of the way.
