Somewhere in Liuzhou, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a new humanoid rolls off the line roughly every ten minutes, and a good part of the work of building it is done by other humanoids. UBTECH's new smart factory, developed with Siemens, runs on what the company calls a "smart brain" that decides what to build, moves the parts, and inspects the finished machines, which each get a serial number and more than four hours of testing before they leave. The plant is rated for 10,000 robots a year. It is a strange image, robots assembling robots, and it marks a quieter shift than any product demo: the humanoid story has moved from the stage to the factory floor.
For a couple of years the sector ran on spectacle, robots dancing, doing kung fu, or being unveiled under dramatic lighting only to turn out to be teleoperated by a human offstage. The news this week is more mundane and more consequential. Chinese automaker Xpeng says its Iron humanoid has walked off an assembly line that is itself 80 percent autonomous, with mass production targeted for the end of 2026 and deliveries in 2027. That timeline puts it neck and neck with Tesla's Optimus, still largely unseen in the wild despite similar promises.
None of this is easy, and the people doing it are unusually frank about that. Xpeng chief executive He Xiaopeng told followers that building a working humanoid is roughly twenty times harder than building a car. A car mostly stays on a predictable road; a robot has to survive the chaos of a living room, balancing on two legs in a world designed for people. He framed the difference as one between specific and general intelligence, between a train on a track and a toddler in a china shop, and teased a "capability jump" for the fourth quarter that would move Iron from scripted motions toward something closer to autonomous reasoning. In an industry littered with prototypes that shine in demos and fail in reality, that is a promise worth watching rather than believing.
The money is flowing to the layers beneath the robots too. D-Robotics, a Chinese maker of robotics chips and developer software, raised $400 million in a Series C round that included an unnamed global internet company, bringing its funding to well over half a billion this year. It says shipments of its Sunrise chips have passed 8 million units and that its S600 processor, launched only last November, has already been adopted by more than 20 embodied-AI customers, from Ubtech to Fourier. That is the tell. When the picks-and-shovels suppliers are scaling into mass production, the field has stopped being a science project. The demos were always the easy part; the hard, unglamorous work of manufacturing at scale is where the humanoid race is actually being run, and right now much of it is running through China.
